26 Nov Linda Magara Horner Wraps Up EMPH Fall Quarter with Healthcare Financial Management
Linda Magara Horner, MBA, just wrapped up fall quarter in UCLA Fielding School of Public Health’s Executive MPH program (EMPH), teaching HPM 436 Healthcare Financial Management.
“Over 30 hours of instruction, we went from finance fundamentals to building financial models,” she shared on LinkedIn. “Reflecting on their insights and growth in the class, I’m truly excited about the kind of leadership they’re bringing to the healthcare industry. And with the season of gratitude here, I’m especially thankful to have been a small part of their journey.”
Taught in the second year of the EMPH program, “Healthcare Financial Management” is designed to prepare students for financial management responsibilities in healthcare. A practical approach for identifying, analyzing, and making recommendations regarding fiscal issues facing healthcare organizations, topics include revenue capture and cost classifications, break-even analysis under diverse payer scenarios, financial statement analytics, operational and capital budgeting, variance analysis, forecasting and pro forma, sensitivity analysis, FTE calculations, and utilization of financial dashboards.
Linda started teaching in the Executive Programs in HPM earlier this year, with HTL ADM 404 “Healthcare Strategy” in UCLA’s online Master of Health Administration (MHA) program.
A dedicated leader and expert in corporate strategy, finance, and healthcare, Linda currently serves as the Senior Director of Corporate Strategic Planning at Medtronic, a role she began in August 2025. In this position, she leads Medtronic’s corporate strategic planning process, partnering across the enterprise as part of the Global Strategy team.
Prior to rejoining Medtronic, Linda was a Partner at Uplifting Capital until August 2025, an impact investment firm where she led corporate strategy initiatives and participated in investment activities, including spearheading the diligence of healthcare impact investments.
Her extensive career also includes serving as the Director of Corporate Strategy at SCAN, a large Medicare Advantage non-profit, and as a Global Product Manager at Medtronic, working on upstream product strategy and evaluating acquisitions.
Linda brings significant finance experience from roles in leveraged finance transactions at Credit Suisse in the Financial Sponsors Investment Banking Group, finance at Aetna, and began her career in the audit practice at Deloitte & Touche, where she became a California Certified Public Accountant (currently inactive). Linda holds an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College and a BS in Business Administration, Accounting from The Master’s University, Summa Cum Laude.
EMPH Fall Quarter ended with Session 7 on November 15th, and Winter Quarter begins with Session 1 on December 5th.
